The gold industry has existed in Iran since thousands of years ago, and the history of gold mines in Iran dates back to 4,000 years ago, and the gold production as the ornament has a long history in Iran. The industry has flourished in the Achaemenid and Safavid eras and in recent centuries.
Today, because of the popular culture of using gold as an ornament, and saving it as the capital and investment, Iran is one of the largest consumers of gold products in the world. The volume of gold used in the country is estimated to be around 2 tons per day, however, this report is mostly unofficially announced, and the annual official gold transactions by the government are far less than the actual figures for gold trades.
There are currently around 50,000 gold markets in Iran which runs traditionally. About 10,000 small gold production workshops and about 100 bigger factories and about 10 large gold factories produce gold and jewelry in the country.
According to the laws and regulations in Iran, the import of gold products made by other countries to Iran is generally prohibited and considered as a crime. But there are a lot of free trade zones in Iran where the gold product of other countries are legally and officially allowed to be imported according to the laws and regulations.
